Your first season of trad climbing
Placing your first piece of gear that actually matters is one of the more memorable moments in climbing. Here's what you need to know to get there safely, and what the first season actually looks like.

Trad climbing is one of those things that sounds intimidating from the outside and turns out to be deeply learnable once you’re inside it. The gear is real, the consequences are real, but the skill of placing protection is a craft, and crafts respond to practice.
This guide covers what your first season actually looks like, not in theory but in practice: the skills that matter, the mistakes you’ll make, and the things you’ll figure out that nobody could have told you in advance.
Before you clip in: what you actually need to be ready
The honest prerequisite for trad climbing is a comfortable sport lead at 5.9 or above. Not because trad routes are necessarily harder, but because the head game of leading, of committing to upward movement when falling is a real outcome, needs to be something you’ve already worked out. When your protection is your own placed gear instead of a pre-drilled bolt, that head game gets more complicated, not less.
If you’re still nervous on sport leads, spend another season on them. Trad will be there.
The second prerequisite is instruction. A one-day intro to trad climbing with an AMGA-certified guide is the most efficient use of time and money available to you. In one day on real rock, a good guide will teach you to place a stopper, evaluate a cam placement, and build a basic anchor. That single day removes the guesswork that people who try to self-teach spend years accumulating.

The first day: learning to see cracks
On your first day of trad instruction, most of what you learn is how to look at rock differently.
Every crack tells you something about what protection it will hold. A constricting crack, where the width narrows as you go deeper, will take a stopper. A parallel-sided crack, where the walls stay the same distance apart through the full depth, needs a cam. A flared crack, where the walls are wider at the back than at the surface, needs offset nuts or a specific cam range. You’ll spend a lot of your first season learning to read which is which before you’ve even touched a piece.
Your guide will have you place gear on the ground first, then on low boulders before you’re off the deck. This feels like overly cautious exercise until you realize that placing a cam with your feet at a stance is completely different from placing one at ear level on a blank granite slab with your feet smearing on a two-inch ledge. Build the muscle memory before you’re in that position.
Nut placements: the concept to internalize first. A nut (or stopper) works by wedging into a constriction. The metal piece is wider at the top than at the bottom, so when the rope pulls down on the wire, the nut cams itself tighter into the narrowing. The key insight: the nut only works if it’s in a constriction. A nut sitting in a parallel crack is not protection. On your first day, you’ll place fifteen nuts and maybe five of them will be in placements you’d actually trust. That’s fine. That ratio improves.
Cam placements: the concept to internalize second. A cam (spring-loaded camming device) works by outward expansion against parallel walls. Pull the trigger, compress the lobes, insert into the crack, release the trigger, the lobes expand and create outward force against the walls. When fall force loads the stem downward, the lobes expand further, creating more friction. The key insight: the cam needs to be in the middle of its range, not retracted to its smallest or fully expanded to its largest. A cam at the extreme of its range can pop out. Your guide will show you what “active range” looks like on a placed cam.
Weeks two through six: building a rack and a system
After your first day, you’ll know what a placed piece looks like but you won’t be able to replicate it reliably under pressure. Weeks two through six are about accumulating reps.
The most useful thing you can do in this period is find a regular climbing partner who’s a few seasons ahead of you. Someone who can look at your placement and say “that’s good” or “walk me through why you chose that” matters more than any amount of video study.
If you don’t have that partner yet, join your local chapter of the American Alpine Club or visit your climbing gym’s trad-climbing meetup. These communities exist specifically for this transition.
In terms of gear, build your rack conservatively. A complete stopper set (Black Diamond sizes 1-13, about $55) and four mid-range cams (sizes 0.75, 1, 2, and 3) is a real trad rack that protects most single-pitch routes. Resist the urge to buy every size on your first purchase. The routes will tell you what you need.
The anchor: the thing that actually matters most
A lot of trad instruction focuses on individual placements. The anchor is what instructors talk about less but what matters more.
An anchor is the gear system at the top of a pitch that holds the rope while you bring up your partner. A good trad anchor is bombproof by redundancy: multiple pieces, equalized so force distributes across all of them, and independent so that if one piece fails the anchor holds. A bad trad anchor is one that would fail if any single piece walked out.
The classic beginner system is the cordelette: 20 feet of 7mm cord tied in a loop, threaded through all your anchor pieces, pulled into equal arms at the loading point, and tied with an overhand to create the master point. It’s slower than newer equalization systems but it’s easy to inspect and hard to build wrong.
Before your first multipitch day, practice building anchors at the ground. Set three or four cams into a wall or boulder, build the cordelette anchor, load it with your body weight, and let someone else inspect it. Do this until building a solid anchor is automatic, not effortful.
What falling on trad feels like
The first time you fall on a piece you placed yourself is different from falling on a bolt. The millisecond before the gear catches, something in your brain registers that this protection is something you built rather than something that was installed professionally. Then the cam catches, the fall stops, and you’re dangling and evaluating.
Most trad falls on solid gear feel the same as sport falls. The gear holds. Your hands shake a little. You climb back up.
The falls that aren’t fine are the ones where the gear is marginal and you know it going in. That’s the skill trad climbing is actually teaching you: to be honest about your placements, to back off when you can’t get gear you trust, to make the call before the fall happens rather than after.
This is why instruction and mentorship matter more than any gear purchase. You can buy a perfect rack and still make bad decisions about when to trust it.
The end of your first season
By the end of your first trad season, a few things will be true.
You’ll have a partial rack that matches the routes you actually climbed. The sizes you’re missing will be obvious to you, not from a list someone gave you but from specific moments where you were at a rest stance with a crack in front of you and didn’t have the right piece.
You’ll have a feel for the difference between a good placement and an okay one. You won’t be able to articulate it fully yet, but the sense is real. You’ll develop that sense further in the second season by talking to better climbers about your placements, not just placing them.
You’ll probably have a route that scared you enough that you backed off and rappelled down. That was the right call. Knowing when to retreat is as much a trad skill as knowing how to place a cam.
The best trad climbers aren’t the ones who never feel uncertain. They’re the ones who’ve developed good judgment about when their uncertainty is appropriate and when it’s just nerves. That takes seasons, not days. Start the clock.
